Hi Dave,
Hope all is well way up north! I just wanted to report that I wore my Nomad shirt on the day that Dave Sherman and I, along with 6 of our buddies from the Bristol Yacht Club rounded Cape Horn. We all flew down to Ushuaia, on the Beagle Channel at the bottom of Argentina, and took a 5-day sailing trip to Cape Horn and back on the Sarah W Vorwerk. Unfortunately, the winds were pretty light, so we didn't get the full Cape Horn experience, but it made it easier and nicer to land the dinghy and climb up to the Cape Horn Albatross monument.

NOMAD planning for the Three Cape Challenge for 2013
The Three Cape Challenge is a non-stop counter clockwise circumnavigation of the Island of Newfoundland by sail only to raise money for Canadian Cancer Society.
In 2005 the crew of Dire Straits (C&C34) completed the first race. In addition to raising over $23000.00 for Cancer Research they hold the speed record for the fastest circumnavigation of the island.
NOMAD is planning to challenge that speed record in the summer of 2013 and continue to use the event to raise donations to The Canadian Cancer Society!

On August 4, 2005, a crew of five set sail from St. John’s in their 34-foot sailboat, the SV Dire Straits. Their mission, the Three Cape Challenge, was to cir- cumnavigate, without stop, the entire island of Newfoundland using only wind power.
Aside from establishing the world speed sailing record for cir- cumnavigation of the island of Newfoundland, the crew intend- ed to finish the trip having raised in excess of $25,000 for the Cana- dian Cancer Society.
On August 17, they did just that.
The crew returned to their point of origin raising in excess of $23,000. They officially passed the Three Cape Challenge crest over to the Canadian Cancer So- ciety and extended a challenge to anybody who wanted to compete in the coming years.
“We’re hoping to turn this into an annual event,’’ says Captain Fred Edwards, whose sister died of cancer leaving her husband and two small children. “If some- body wants the bragging rights to the Three Cape Challenge ... hope- fully our trip will motivate others to do it, too.’’

Halifax St Pierre Race is getting close!
Only 6 weeks and we will be seeing activity around the boat yard again! Things will be hopping for us as we get NOMAD ready to sail to Halifax then take part in Halifax to St Pierre Race, then Ocean One Race.
Update: Engine has been removed and rebuilt, will be reinstalled first week of April. This will help a lot with boat delivery to Halifax
New traveller is on the way! Simple to install.
Sails are with sailmaker being inspected and checked.
Lots of other things being worked on!

Sign on as project owner
I am in the process of compiling a list of work to be done on NOMAD to ensure we are ready for 2012 Halifax to St Pierre and OceanOne.
Looking at the projects we have and let me know if you would like to take ownership of getting it done! I will provide all materials, tools etc but just need someone to see that jobs get done and done right.
1.) Replace two thru hulls, one for engine seawater and one for aft cabin head
2.) Rebuild two heads.
3.) Replace traveller system and genoa cars
4.) Service all deck winches, cleats, spin locks, etc
5.) Refinish cabin teak and holly sole
6.) Rebuild engine (Jerry Mitchell)
7.) Remove and reinstall engine (Ben King)
8.) Repair Autopilot wiring/connections
It's going to be a long winter, nothing better to past the time than planning for a project like this.

There are a lot of ways you can get involved and help out with racing this summer.
NOMAD, WAR EAGLE and BELLA J will be racing, representing RNYC. We are hoping to get good participation in the OceanOne part of the race as well at St. Johns Port Authority with boats that come up from St Pierre.
If you enjoy boats and want to help out we have lots of things to do. Let us know if your interested. We need people on the ground as well as in the boats to make this successful.
Being part of a shore crew is a lot of fun, just follow the Volvo Ocean Race and learn of the important role of shore support. If you have some time, want to get involved in boat preparations, boat deliveries, organizing shore events and even the race itself let us know.
